About Chiropractic

What ls Chiropractic and How Does It Work?

Chiropractic is the practice of restoring the body’s ability to heal itself. Our cells, tissues, and organs are designed to resist diseases. However, if there is interference, our health is affected.

With the chiropractic approach, interferences are located and removed to help restore the natural state of your health. Interferences to the nervous system are commonly identified, such as loss of motion or position of any of the 24 bones of the spinal column. The chiropractic doctor removes these interferences, giving you improved spinal function and improved nervous system.

What Do Chiropractic Doctors Do?

The chiropractic doctor first takes a case history. This includes a background of your health, accidents, and surgeries, as well as your current condition and your specific health problem. A thorough examination will then be conducted, which may be done through an X-ray.

After identifying the problem areas, your chiropractic doctor would set a plan for chiropractic adjustments. He or she would also monitor the progress through regular examinations and follow-up reports.

Common Health Problems Addressed by Chiropractic

Do I Have a Pinched Nerve?

A pinched nerve is commonly associated with the spine, but it is actually rare. Known as a compressive lesion, a pinched nerve is felt when nerve function is disrupted, causing numbness or that “pins and needles” feeling.

More often than not, facilitative lesion happens. This means that nerves are irritated whenever nerve tissue is rubbed, scraped, or stretched due to malfunctioning of the spinal bones.

What Is an Adjustment?

A chiropractic adjustment is done to improve spinal function, nervous system function, and restore health. The chiropractor applies force to a fixated or “locked up” joint to add motion to it and help move it back to its normal position. Your doctor may use his or her hands or an instrument to deliver an accurate thrust. Some adjustments can be quick, but others can be gradual and slow.

Are All Patients Adjusted the Same Way?

No. The adjustments depend on the doctor’s evaluation of your health problem. Every person has a unique spinal pattern, so it is possible that the same health issues among patients be found to have different causes. A patient may be suffering from headaches, but the actual cause could be a lower back problem. Similarly, a patient who experiences numbness in their fingers may have a problem with their neck.

Can I Adjust Myself?

It is virtually impossible for you to do chiropractic adjustments to yourself. Adjustments are done in a precise manner and cannot be done by simply turning, bending, or twisting your joints. Doing this may cause even more damage. In a nutshell, adjusting the spine is only for professionals.

Why Do Children Need Chiropractic Care?

It is possible that significant spinal trauma occurs at birth. Thus, most parents opt to have their newborns checked. As the child grows up and learns how to walk, ride a bike, and do other childhood activities, he or she may encounter spinal problems. Any spinal damage is often unseen, with the child’s complaints brushed off as part of their growth.

With regular chiropractic checkups, your doctor would be able to identify any problems and could significantly reduce health complaints later in their adulthood. Most parents who had their child treated by a chiropractic doctor claimed that their child had fewer complaints and are healthier than other children.

Can I Speed the Healing Process?

There are no shortcuts to force your body to heal itself, but you can do the following to support the healing process:

  • Have proper posture, especially in sitting and when lifting objects.
  • Perform specific exercises that can help support your back.
  • Get ample rest. Sleep in a comfortable position, but do not sleep on your stomach.
  • Eat balanced meals. If overweight, it would help to switch to a diet that helps with weight loss. This would reduce stress to your spine.

Most of all, regularly attend your appointments with your chiropractic doctor and follow his or her recommendations.

Am I Too Old for Chiropractic Care?

Natural chiropractic care is becoming more and more popular and with reason. People have been conscious of the side effects of overmedication and prescription drugs. With chiropractic, we can better take care of our health without resorting to too many medications.

Chiropractic is a simple and effective method of addressing our health issues. As we get older, its effects would become more evident. Rest assured that your doctor will conduct the necessary adjustments for your comfort and to obtain maximum results.

How Long Will I Need Chiropractic Care?

The duration of chiropractic care depends on you. Some patients find it helpful to have regular checkups to maintain good health. Others turn to chiropractic doctors only when they feel unbearable pain. Whatever your health goals may be, Davis Chiropractic is ready to help you address your health problems.
